In the past few years more and more information has come to us regarding testing of all kinds of products on animals. Cosmetics and other kinds of skin care products like shampoo were a large part of that. And to be fair, the pictures and video footage that were published were in many cases absolutely horrendous. Although there was a lot of media interest for a while, and many people, including celebrities, got up and campaigned again this practice, we definitely are not there yet! Things have improved, there is a large group of companies that have changed their ways and have closed their labs. They now make sure they test in a different way. Hand in hand with this move towards not using animals to test products, which we now call Cruelty Free testing, is the trend towards more an more natural skin care products and makeup. It has been shown that using natural, preferably organic, products on your skin has many health benefits. Your skin is your largest organ, and whatever gets on your skin is absorbed into your body. Some experts now even say: If you would not put it in your mouth, don’t put it on your skin! And this is an interesting rule to use when it comes to skin care.
Tests have been done with nail polish. Off course nail polish contains some chemical products, solvents, that keep it fluid till it is exposed to the air. These solvents then disappear and the solid layer stays on your nails. We now know that the solvent not only evaporates, part of it is absorbed. Researchers have found these chemicals 30 minutes after application..in the kidneys and livers of the people using the nail polish.
So we now have the great situation that we can make it very clear to the cosmetics and skin care industry that we do not want them to test on defenseless animals, and that we also want natural products that will not poison us, but will even enhance our health and with that our looks! The most powerful tool we have are our dollars: Where we use our dollars, we give off a powerful signal.
